SAS refund for cancellation.
Are you eligible to it? If so, what are the applicable rules?
In the event of a flight cancellation, SAS’s refund policy is not the only factor. European Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 covers the situation and sets out exactly what airlines have to do – plus your rights as a passenger. Simply put, this regulation lays out the steps that European airlines need to take when cancelling a flight and spells out your rights in these situations.
SAS Refund For Cancellation
There are two possible scenarios.
So, let’s start with a question — when was your flight cancelled?
Scenario 1: Flight Is Cancelled Less Than 2 Weeks Before the Trip
You can get: Refund or new flight + compensation (if it’s due to the fault of SAS).
If your flight is cancelled by SAS no more than 14 days before your trip, you have the option to receive a full refund or to be booked on a new flight to your destination. SAS is required to offer you both options, and you may choose whichever one is most convenient for you. If the cancellation is SAS’s fault, you may also be eligible for compensation for the cancelled flight.
Both refund and compensation must be transferred to your bank account.

Scenario 2: Flight Is Cancelled More Than 2 Weeks Before the Trip
You can get: Refund or new flight to your destination.
No compensation is due if the cancellation has happened more than 14 days before the trip. However, you still can get a refund, if that’s what you want (instead of another flight). SAS must give you a choice – between a new flight and refund – and you have the right to choose the option that suits your needs the best.
Your SAS refund should be paid within 7 days.
Contact the airline to check your SAS refund request status.
What If You Miss a Connecting Flight Due to Cancellation?
In short – the rules are the same like with flight delays, you have to look at how much later, when compared to original arrival time, you have reached your destination (in this case, SAS also gives you a new flight for free; it can also be with a different airline).

SAS Cancelled Flight Refund: FAQ
1. If My Flight Is Cancelled, Do I Get a Refund?
If you are flying with SAS, and it’s a flight from or to Europe, then yes.
You have the option to get a refund instead of a new flight, but you can’t have both.
However, if SAS cancels your flight less than 14 days before your trip and it’s their fault, you might be eligible for both a refund or new flight and SAS compensation.
2. SAS Voucher Refund or Cash, Can I Get Money?
What if SAS is offering you a voucher instead of compensation?
During the COVID-19 crisis, many airlines were offering vouchers instead of cash refunds. However, it’s important to know that you don’t have to accept a voucher from SAS (or any other European airline, for that matter). According to European Union regulations (Regulation (EC) No 261/2004), airline compensation and refunds must be paid in cash or by bank transfer.
Have you already been given a voucher?
Ask SAS to exchange travel voucher to cash.
3. SAS Refusing Refund For Cancellation?
If SAS is denying you a refund, don’t lose hope.
Remind them that they are obligated to refund you and reference Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, Articles 5 and 8. If you don’t get a satisfactory response, get in touch with the national enforcement body in the country where your flight originated.
4. Can You Get Both Compensation and Refund?
There are situations when you can get both.
If your SAS flight is cancelled less than 14 days before departure due to SAS’s fault, you are entitled to both a full refund and compensation from SAS. Keep in mind that the airline must transfer both the refund and compensation to your bank account rather than in the form of vouchers or coupons.
If you have already received a voucher or coupon from SAS, you can exchange it for a cash refund by contacting SAS.
5. What Is The SAS Policy On Flight Cancellation?
If you are flying with Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and need to cancel your flight, the refund will depend on the type of ticket purchased.
For refundable tickets, you will get a full refund minus any cancellation fees.
For non-refundable tickets, you will only receive a refund for any taxes paid.
However, if SAS cancels your flight, you are entitled to a full refund or a new booking as per EU Regulation (EC) No 261/2004.
6. What Are The Procedures If SAS Cancels My Flight?
In the event that SAS cancels your flight, they will offer you the choice between a refund or rerouting to your final destination (new flight for free) at the earliest opportunity.
If you choose rerouting, SAS will take care of your meals and accommodation if required. If the cancellation is due to SAS’s fault and the notice is less than 14 days, you may also be eligible for compensation under EU Regulation (EC) No 261/2004.
7. How Long Does SAS Take To Process Refunds?
SAS typically processes refunds within 7-10 business days of receiving the refund request.
However, depending on the payment method and bank processing times, it might take longer for the funds to reflect in your account. At the same time, if it’s taking longer than 7-10 days, you may contact them to remind about yourself and your cancellation refund.
8. Can I Get A Voucher Instead Of A Refund From SAS?
Yes, SAS may offer you a voucher in place of a refund.
However, as already mentioned, under EU Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, you have the right to reject the voucher and request cash compensation instead. If you prefer a voucher, you can choose voucher.
